Step 1: Heat Things Up
Set your oven to 400°F (200°C) so it’s fully hot before baking. A properly preheated oven helps the skins crisp while the inside turns soft and fluffy.
Step 2: Clean and Prep
Wash the sweet potatoes under running water and scrub off any dirt. Dry them thoroughly with a towel—dry skin equals better texture in the oven.
Step 3: Arrange for Baking
Line a rimmed baking sheet with foil or parchment paper for easy cleanup. Place the potatoes directly on the sheet, leaving space between each one for even heat circulation.
Step 4: Bake Until Tender
Roast for 45–55 minutes, depending on size. They’re ready when a knife slides easily into the center with no resistance. You can also gently squeeze them (use a clean towel to protect your hands)—they should feel soft inside.
Step 5: Slice and Fill
Carefully cut a slit lengthwise across the top. Press the ends slightly to open them up, fluff the inside with a fork, and add butter, salt, and your favorite toppings.
