Method
Step 1: Prepare the Crockpot
Lightly coat the inside of your slow cooker with non-stick cooking spray or a thin layer of butter. This helps prevent the pudding from sticking and makes cleanup much easier later.
Step 2: Combine the Ingredients
Add the milk, instant rice, granulated sugar, brown sugar, butter, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and salt directly into the crockpot. Stir everything thoroughly so the rice and sugar are evenly distributed throughout the milk mixture. If you enjoy raisins mixed into the pudding, stir them in now so they soften and plump up during cooking.
Step 3: Cook the Rice Pudding
Place the lid on the slow cooker and cook on low heat for about 4 hours. Stir the pudding occasionally—about once every hour—to keep the rice from settling at the bottom. As it cooks, the rice will absorb the milk and gradually thicken into a creamy pudding.
Step 4: Check the Texture
Once the rice is tender and the mixture has thickened, the pudding is ready. Keep in mind that it will continue to thicken slightly as it cools. If it becomes thicker than you prefer, simply stir in a splash of warm milk to loosen the texture.
Step 5: Serve
Spoon the warm pudding into serving bowls. Top with a sprinkle of cinnamon, a few raisins, or a cinnamon stick for an extra cozy presentation.
Notes
Storage & Reheating
Storing Leftovers
Transfer leftover rice pudding to an airtight container and store it in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.Reheating
Rice pudding thickens as it chills. When reheating, stir in a small splash of milk before warming it on the stovetop or in the microwave to restore its creamy texture.Freezing
Freezing is not recommended for this recipe. The rice can become grainy and the texture may separate once thawed.Best Way to Enjoy
This dessert tastes best when served warm and freshly made, but it’s also delicious chilled for a refreshing treat the next day.Recipe Notes & Helpful Tips
Choose instant rice:Using instant rice ensures the pudding cooks evenly and develops the right texture. Regular long-grain rice may require different cooking times and liquid ratios. Adjust the thickness:
Everyone has a different preference when it comes to rice pudding texture. If you like it thicker, cook it slightly longer. For a looser pudding, stir in additional milk. Add raisins during cooking:
Mixing raisins into the pudding while it cooks allows them to soften and absorb flavor. For extra richness:
Replace one cup of milk with half-and-half or evaporated milk for an even creamier dessert.
